Job Summary:

The school counselor will assist students in adapting to the social, emotional, and academic challenges of school in various settings.  The school counselor will have knowledge of current state laws, policies, and procedures 

 

Qualifications:

Professional Educator License (PEL) with a school counselor endorsement.

Master’s degree required

 

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Staff.

 

Reports to:

Building Principal or Designee

 

Terms of Employment:

This is a 9-month position. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of child growth and development and effective instructional strategies.
  2. Assists and provides support to students struggling with social-emotional and behavioral concerns through the MTSS framework.
  3. Provides character education to students in a variety of settings including individual, small group and classrooms. 
  4. Participates in building meetings to represent the social-emotional and aspect of the educational setting. 
  5. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality that is student focused. 
  6. Provides individual and/or group counseling to identified students in the areas of academic and social/emotional behaviors.
  7. Provides interventions for students in crisis.
  8. Maintains data collection and recordkeeping to monitor the social-emotional well being of students. 
  9. Demonstrates leadership skills in working with individuals and groups (i.e. initiating individual or group discussion, listening, clarifying, and facilitating interactions and sharing ideas).
  10. Evaluates, documents, and follows-up regarding social/emotional concerns. 
  11. Submits reports/forms to the appropriate person(s), as required.
  12. Addresses parent concerns and provide community resources as necessary.
  13. Advocates for students with school staff and administration.
  14. Mobilizes school and community resources to support the student in the educational setting.
  15. Consults with school staff to address social-emotional concerns of students. 
  16. Assists teachers with classroom interventions.
  17. Creates partnerships with community resources. 
  18. Performs other duties and responsibilities as determined by the principal or designee or as needs arise.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Must have excellent planning and organization skills
  • Must have the ability to work collaboratively with others 
  • Must have strong verbal communication skills
  • Must model a desire and willingness to continually learn

Physical Demands:

The physical demands of this position include frequent sitting and standing for extended periods of time. Dependent on class/student assignment the employee may occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds. Repetitive bending at the waist as well as kneeling, stooping, crouching to assist students is also required. Employees may reach overhead as well as above the shoulders and horizontally.
