Reports to: Supervisor of Related Services

Employment Information: Full-time, 10-month bargaining unit position

 

 

 

 

Summary:

Responds to students and staff in need of immediate health care while on school campus. Promotes healthy living by addressing health related issues. Provides comprehensive health assessments and problem management services to students. Manages the school health program and maintains comprehensive health records for each student. Provides health counseling to students, parents and school personnel on issues designed to promote good health habits in students. Collaborates with school personnel and service providers in the community to meet individual student’s needs.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or university required.
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program required.
  • CRNP or National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) certification preferred. 
  • Recent certification in CPR/First Aid.
  • Two or more years of professional nursing experience preferred
  • Fluency in ASL or willingness to develop fluency in ASL within a reasonable period of time.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and coordinate school health services including mandated screenings, medication administration, G-tube feedings and management of acute and chronic health problems.
  • Assure adherence to requirements for mandated vaccines and promotion of infectious disease control and safety.
  • Promotes and protects the optimal health status of students
  • Provides health assessments and obtains a health history of students
  • Serve as liaison between private duty nurses, nursing agencies and the school.
  • Develops plans for student care based on assessment, interventions, and identification of outcomes, and the evaluation of care
  • Serves as consultants with other school professionals, such as food service, physical education teachers, coaches, and counselors
  • Provides health-related education to students and staff in both individual and group settings
  • Monitors immunizations, managing communicable diseases, and assessing the school environment as to prevent injury and ensure safety
  • Oversees infection control measures
  • Provides first aid treatment to students and staff. 
  • Refers staff to outside treatment for work related injuries and submits report to HR.
  • Actively participating in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying, and emergencies that may occur at school
  • Oversees medication administration, health care procedures, and the development of healthcare plans
  • Oversees vision, hearing, body mass index, and mental health screening procedures
  • Makes decisions related to the delegation of healthcare tasks as directed by state laws and professional practice guidance
  • Provides health advice to school educational teams, such as the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) team
  • Assists families with locating outside care and obtaining health insurance

This position may require the following physical demands:

  • Regularly lift up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Generally work in standard office conditions and climate.
  • Work in a stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied diverse array of contacts.
  • Regularly walk, sit, stand, kneel, crouch, stoop and reach with hands and arms.
  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
  • Use of hands for fine manipulations to handle, feel to touch. 
  • Near vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screen.
