Job Description

The Bridges’ ESL / EL Coordinator and Teacher coordinates instructional support for students in grades PreK3 to 5th grade. This position also provides direct instructional support to students and supervises EL teachers.

EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be “highly qualified” and have at minimum a BA and passing score on state required test for ESL instruction, or Certification in ESL instruction, or Masters in TESOL or related field. Masters degree preferred.
Knowledge of ELL regulations.
2 – 5 years of successful classroom teaching experience with an emphasis in ESL.
2 years administrative/supervisory experience desired, but not required.
Fluency in spoken and written Spanish required.
Citizenship, residency or work visa in United States required.
Have a track record of being a team player and community minded.
Be committed to their own learning.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

The ideal candidate has knowledge and experience teaching in an elementary school ESL program; exhibits superior organizational and communication skills; is compassionate; can provide effective collaborative and open-minded leadership; and is knowledgeable about recent research in pedagogy in the field of second language acquisition and ELL education.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee school-wide program to ensure all ELL students are adequately supported.
Ensure compliance with all laws and regulation relating to ELL students.
Coordinate and administer required language proficiency and academic achievement tests for determining placement, ongoing monitoring of student progress and determining when student is to be exited from program.
Develop Language acquisition support plans (ESL plans) for all ELL students and work with classroom teachers to implement plans.
Work with classroom teachers to support differentiated instruction.
Support students instructionally in classroom or pull out setting.
Develop appropriate curriculum to help ELL students acquire the English language.
Compiles and maintain a profile summary (record of achievement and progress) for each student.
Gather and report data for reporting requirements and other required reports (to the State, Dept of Education, census, grant applications, annual report, etc.).
Provide leadership in Staff Development pertaining to ELL students; promotes research based pedagogical practices among program staff.
Supervise and assign duties to ESL teachers.
Establish and maintain communication with parents of students in the program.
Facilitate workshops for parents.
Engage parents and families in their student’s learning and acting as an ambassador for the school in the community.
Contribute productively to the school as a whole.
Attend and participate in school events outside of regular school hours.
Other duties as assigned.

SALARY & BENEFITS
Salary is based on educational level, certification(s), and years of experience. Employees will be contracted yearly. Contracts will be renewed according to evaluations and staff interest. Health benefits (medical & dental), disability insurance, and a retirement plan: 401-(k) or the continuation of the DCPS retirement plan.
