Job Description

The Dayton City School District McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program is currently recruiting for Homework Assistance Providers at local Temporary Housing Shelters.  Homework Assistance Providers are responsible for enhancing reading and math literacy of homeless children and youth.


Salary:  $19.00 per hour, Monday through Thursday, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.




  1. Continually assesses student progress and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for progress.

  2. Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.

  3. Informs the Homeless Education Liaison when home visits become necessary to improve student achievement.

  4. Participates and assists with extracurricular activities for homeless children and youth.

  5. Forecasts educational needs of each student and collaborates with teacher/advisors in diagnosing learning gaps and developing interventions.

  6. Provides supplemental and educational resources in order to support student growth.



  • Good knowledge of content, methods, materials, and equipment for academics.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students and parents.

  • Effective oral and written communication.

  • Ability to instruct students on computer software usage.

  • Patience and ability to work harmoniously with homeless children and youth.

  • Knowledge of working with socially disadvantaged children and youth.



  1. Minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience at primary level.

  2. Successful intervention program experience.

  3. Must hold a Reading Endorsement.

  4. Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.

In order to be considered as an applicant, you must be willing to provide services at a domestic violence, substance abuse/mental health or emergency housing shelter.  The site may be located in a subsidized housing area.
