Position Overview

The Science Specialist responsible for supporting the Science Supervisor in the organization, operation, and coordination of Science curriculum and instruction in the Loudoun County Public Schools.  In accordance with these responsibilities, the Science Specialist assists in the planning, development, implementation and assessment of the Science programs in all Loudoun County Public Schools in kindergarten through grade 12.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the Science instructional program, determines curricular and instructional needs and develops plans to meet those needs through coaching and professional learning; ensures that the Loudoun County Science program is responsive to the accreditation guidelines established by the Virginia Department of Education; and develops proactive strategies to meet students’ instructional needs and Science standards for the Commonwealth of Virginia, in cooperation with the Science Supervisor and other educational professionals.
  • Provides support in the planning and implementation of professional learning to support the LCPS mission; designs and delivers effective professional learning focused on educational equity for the purpose of improving outcomes for students.
  • Collaborates with other key leaders to support the learning process and programs for Science in the areas of deeper learning, culturally responsive instruction, project-based learning, and performance assessments.
  • Coordinates with the Science Supervisor and the Department of Support Services to design and implement safe practices in the science classroom, and to provide appropriate guidelines, procedures, equipment, resources, and facilities for faculty and students in order to protect them from potential hazards present in the science classroom.
  • Directs or assists in coordinating special projects and initiatives in Science, including the annual LCPS Regional Science and Engineering Fair, RSEF. Works with other central office departments when appropriate to provide coordinated instructional services.
  • Assists with the selection, purchase, and distribution of enrichment and support materials and equipment; maintains materials inventories; supports the ongoing instructional needs of schools.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget of the District; assists in the preparation of reports, attends School Board Meetings when directed, and serves on committees as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Carries out related assignments, as determined by the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, to support professional learning in the design and delivery of authentic learning for students that lead to deeper learning.



  • Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement in a Science area
  • Five years of experience in the teaching of Science
  • Demonstrated the professional characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community


Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.


Telework Disclosure

Employees who perform the responsibilities of the above position have been identified as having the potential to telework. Telework is defined as completing one's duties and responsibilities at a site other than one's assigned duty location. In order to be eligible for telework privileges, an employee must have demonstrated consistent, positive performance and have the support and approval of their direct supervisor. In addition, these employees must have reliable high-speed internet and a designated workspace that allows them privacy while completing sensitive and confidential work.  Employees who are non-exempt and are teleworking will work their required scheduled hours and gain approval from their supervisor if they work more than 8 hours a day or more than 40 hours in a workweek.  Teleworking privileges can be amended, changed, or revoked based upon the performance of the employee, as well as the needs of Loudoun County Public Schools.
