    Location Description

    Residential and Day Services

The Don Watson Academy is a state-approved special education residential and day school that serves students 6-18 years of age with social emotional disabilities. The student enrollment averages between 40-50 students, including students residing at the Residential Program and an average of 30-35 Day Students from the surrounding communities.

    Purpose

The ARC (Attachment, Regulation, and Competency) model, trauma informed, therapeutic integrated program combines education, therapy, recreational and social services. The curriculum and support services promote healthy relationships with peers and staff, and instill educational and social confidence, helping students to reach their full potential.

    Academics

The school works with various school districts across the state to ensure student educational services are being met. Students’ Individual Education Program (IEP) will be integrated into each student’s daily instruction.

Classrooms are divided into curriculum teams for elementary, middle school, and high school to ensure students are accessing the required curriculum as determined by the Massachusetts Frameworks and sending school districts. The classes are structured with low student-to-staff ratio (3:1) and individuality is encouraged and maintained for each student.

Classrooms are self–contained with the exception of the high school classes which are content-specific. In addition to the classrooms delivering core content, special academic instruction is provided to students in Physical Education, Health, Career Education, and Social Skills. Special services in the areas of Title I Reading & Math, Adaptive Physical Education, Occupational Therapy, and Speech & Language are available for those students requiring these services.

The curriculum is taught in accordance with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and is overseen by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Lessons, projects, and activities are taught and reinforced through a hands-on approach. Learn more about us...
