Job Description




The position of One-on-One Assistant shall require a high school diploma or a high school equivalency certificate; 60 college credits preferred, or other such equivalency as required by federal/state law and/or the State of New Jersey Board of Examiners; The position also requires the physical and mental capacity to perform the major responsibilities of the job assignment.



The Mercer County Special Services School District Board of Education (Board) upon the recommendation of the Superintendent shall make appointment.



The One-on-One Assistant is a non-tenured annual salaried employee. The One-on-One Assistant shall be assigned to a specific student (or students) and will serve in this role only as long as the student’s (or students’) individualized education plan (IEP) indicates the need for a One-on-One Assistant.  The salary, fringe benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment are as negotiated between the Board and the Mercer County Special Services Education and Therapeutic Association. 



The One-on-One Assistant shall report to the building principal or other administrators as designated by the Superintendent.



The One-on-One Assistant is assigned to a student (or students) to perform the duties as described in their IEP’s.  The One-on-One Assistant works under the direction of the classroom teachers and/or certified staff to promote the target student’s (or students’) academic achievement, behavioral growth, socio-emotional relationships, and personal development.  The One-on-One Assistant must adapt to the particular educational/therapeutic needs of the student(s).



The One-on-One Assistant must demonstrate physical strength, agility, and energy to perform essential job functions and to ensure health, welfare, and safety of all students and of self.  The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by the employee to perform the essential functions of the job: sitting, standing, reaching, walking, lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, finger dexterity, carrying, repetitive motions, speaking, listening, and visual acuity.  The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.





The essential functions and elements of this position include but are not limited to the following:

A. Supports instruction through one-on-one student assistance as appropriate based upon the student’s IEP’s and in consultation with administrators, teachers and professional staff. B. Assists the classroom teacher in the delivery of an effective instructional program.

C. Maintains regular communication with staff regarding the student’s needs.

D. Delivers specific cues and prompts as needed to initiate appropriate student response. Assists the student directly with understanding the subject matter and with appropriate behavior in the classroom.

E. Assists the student in dealing with their emotional and social problems by providing alternative creative outlets.

F. Attends to the physical needs of the student, if required, which may include toileting, dressing, feeding, lifting, placing students on equipment and other tasks as needed.

G. Ensures the health, welfare and safety of the student and of self by demonstrating the strength, agility, and energy to perform essential job functions. Ability to properly physically restrain the student, if needed, who may consistently demonstrate impulsive, destructive, aggressive and/or dangerous outbursts toward self, staff and/or other students.

H. Assists the teacher with establishing appropriate goals and objectives for the student.

I. Completes any clerical duties as needed related to the instructional program.

J. Assists in preparing classroom, instructional and/or therapeutic materials in advance.

K. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom and helps the student master equipment, as needed.

L. Maintains and communicates established classroom rules and practices.

M. Assists with the supervision of the student during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips.

N. Participates in ongoing, designated, district-provided training to ensure delivery of relevant, practical behavior management and instructional programming.

O. Maintains cooperative relationships with instructional, support and administrative district personnel as well as parents and guardians.

P. Communicates with administrative and instructional personnel (building principal, teachers, other professional staff, aides), regarding student progress.

Q. Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information.

R. Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may, from time to time, be assigned by the building principal/other designated administrators.



Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy (4220) on evaluation of a One-on-One Assistant and non-tenured support staff employees.
