Waterloo Community School District in Waterloo, Iowa, is looking for a proven leader who is passionate about education, provides exceptional opportunities for all students, and brings innovation and collaboration to the school setting. Duties for this position begin July 1, 2022.

The Waterloo Community School District includes the cities of Waterloo, Evansdale, Elk Run Heights, Gilbertville, and Raymond, part of the city of Cedar Falls, and certain unincorporated areas in Black Hawk County. The district is located entirely within Black Hawk County and encompasses approximately 150 square miles.

Waterloo is one of the 10 largest and diverse school districts of Iowa’s 377 public school systems. The enrollment is 10,878 students with a global majority student population. The district currently operates two comprehensive and one alternative high school, four middle schools and eleven elementary schools. The Waterloo Career Center provides career and technical education pathways for all Waterloo students and twelve neighboring school districts. Waterloo has 851 full-time equivalent (FTE) professional employees (including administrators and teachers) and 558 FTE support staff. Approximately 40% of the teaching staff have advanced degrees.

Waterloo offers a unique opportunity for the next superintendent. It is a district embedded within a community that is richly diverse in socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds reflective of the global landscape of the 21st century; it boasts a one-of-a-kind highly successful regional career center; and is working directly with the State of Iowa Department of Education to launch an innovative program that strategically advances the district's efforts to close the achievement gap. Waterloo Schools offers a vast array of state, national, and internationally recognized programs such as Leader in Me, Junior Achievement, and International Baccalaureate as well as mission-centric K-12 career-ready programs unique to Waterloo like Life Labs. The new leader of Waterloo Schools will promote, enhance and grow our career tech education opportunities. Waterloo seeks a leader who will also invest in the existing and thriving community partnerships while developing new relationships and opportunities to advance our position as an organization highly invested in co-creating a thriving Cedar Valley region for our students and families. Stakeholder and focus groups share that Waterloo Schools has dedicated professionals, both inside and outside the school setting, who are ready to help the new superintendent maximize the potential of each child attending Waterloo Schools.

Applicants must have (or be able to obtain) Iowa BoEE licensure with endorsements 171 – Superintendent/AEA Administrator and 190 – Evaluator.

The communities within Waterloo Schools have many amenities and attractions for prospective applicants and their families.  Research the area’s cultural, dining, retail, and recreational amenities at Experience Waterloo.  The Cedar Valley is also home to the University of Northern Iowa and Hawkeye Community College. There are also several state-of-the-art medical facilities in and around Waterloo that have connections with the University of Iowa Health Center in Iowa City and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
