Classification Title: Special Education Therapy Staff Assistant

Calendar: A, School Days

ESP Salary Schedule: Range 30 Step 1
Hours: 5.5/Day 27.5/Week

Location: Education Service Center

General Purpose


Responsible for providing one on one attention to physically immobile students on life support; periodically teaching core subjects to elementary children who have multiple physical handicaps; maintaining their physical needs; implementing motor development activities which facilitate the attainment of individual educational programs and/or independent functioning of students in the educational setting; and implementing strategies that address school success and school completion for students in need of additional support to graduate.


Main Tasks and Responsibilities


  • Assists with program activities to increase skills in the areas of fine and gross motor development; to foster independence in the areas of daily living such as dressing, feeding, toileting, transfers, mobility, etc.; and to stimulate visual motor and/or perceptual functioning as required for handwriting, reading, typing, cutting, and promote independence in the student’s educational program.  
  • Provide sensory motor stimulation, adaptive equipment, or an adapted environment as directed by the therapist.
  • Work with students on fine motor skills and activities, and specific IEP goals.
  • Manage equipment and equipment inventory, keeping a record of equipment inventory on the computer.  
  • Maintain equipment as far as overall condition, cleanliness and location.  
  • Deliver or pick up equipment needed for students at individual schools.
  • Record student attendance and individual student performance on a daily basis, provide updated data sheets for classroom records, monitor classroom data sheets and inform the therapist of any pertinent information.
  • Assist with adaptation of equipment and positioning of special education students.
  • Assist with clerical duties such as maintaining the orderliness of therapy files, filling out student information sheets, and assisting in developing data sheets or other materials.  
  • Maintain testing equipment and test protocols and gather materials as requested by the therapist.
  • Serve as liaison between the therapy department and other school personnel directly involved with students while serving students on an itinerant basis.  It is the responsibility of the motor assistant to request assistance from the supervising therapist if uncertain of how to implement the assigned duties.
  • Apply specific behavior modification techniques to assist students in learning.
  • Maintain care and cleanliness of work areas and materials.
  • Travel from school to school on a daily basis, and may be asked to transport students on field trips and/or community outings using their own transportation or district car.


Other Duties as Assigned


  • Teach children on life support (paralyzed from the neck down) core subjects such as reading, math, spelling; record the child’s answers to problems, etc.
  • Provide one-on-one assistance in core subjects such as reading, language arts, math, music, art, and other areas as assigned by the Special Education Teacher.
  • Help determine methods of approaching subjects so that children learn most effectively.
  • Assist students with physical needs, including feeding, diapering, and toileting.
  • Maintain classroom calendar, bulletin boards and room arrangements.
  • Record all daily teaching activity, toileting needs, and learning achieved by each child.
  • Assure medical and physical safety of children.
  • Maintain class discipline and use behavior modification techniques, as needed.
  • Help move children from classroom to classroom (e.g., mainstreaming needs).
  • Assist on a few field trips each year.
  • Provide follow-up activity in the classroom which is prescribed by physical and speech therapists.
  • Use equipment (computers, adding machines, typewriters, therapy stabilizing equipment, etc.) as needed.
  • Meet the bus and assist children on and off.


Education and Experience


  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two (2) years of related experience
  • Valid Utah Driver’s License, car insurance and access to a dependable vehicle
  • Knowledge of community and educational resources
  • Ability to negotiate, compromise, and confront conflict, with good communication skills 
  • Ability to work independently and in a variety of settings
  • Ability and willingness to work with families using a non-blaming approach


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements


  • The job frequently requires a moderate level of physical exertion such as handling medium weight material (11-50 pounds), extensive standing, walking, crawling, bending, stooping or climbing, or assisting special education students with their physical needs.
  • The job is frequently carried out in mildly disagreeable conditions.  Work involves exposure to unpleasant elements such as noise, ventilation, crowded nature of work, exposure to outside weather conditions, pressures related to sensitive situations, sitting/standing in one position for an extended period of time, etc., that yield a perceptible level of discomfort.
